The Esquire Covers @ MoMa

George Lois (1931, New York) is a legend, a feisty old legend that is. Eight books had already been published about ‘America’s master communicator’. This is the ninth, a catalog of his famous Esquire covers - measuring the size of the original Esquire - now installed in the permanent collection of the MoMa. Being Mr. Big Idea from the 1960s, Lois basically impersonates Mad Men, the Award winning tv series. Turns out, Lois hates the series. In an edition of Playboy that celebrates Mad Men he shows he hasn’t lost any of his passion, claiming: “The more I think and write about Mad Men, the more I take the show as a personal insult.  So fuck you, Mad Men, you phony gray-flannel-suit, male-chauvinist, no-talent, WASP, white-shirted, racist, anti-Semitic Republican SOBs!”
 

The book features many of the world-famous Esquire covers Lois made between 1962 and 1972, including the wounded Ali and JFK with the tear. Iconic stuff. Be sure to check his website and his appearance on The Selby as well - it’s cool.
