Steve McCurry
The Iconic Photographs
Just recently Dutch photo journalist Hans Aarsman claimed on TV that photography that is merely beautiful is actually worthless. Photography, so Hans says, has to be relevant. As an example he named Steve McCurry and in particular his portrait of the Afghan girl. “Green eyes, red, clothes, green background, sure everybody loves that and that is to easy, irrelevant.” Haha, funny guy, that Hans. That portrait of the Afghan girl has become an icon and touched millions of people. How’s that for relevance? If you cannot appreciate a photo for its beauty alone, we feel a bit sorry for you.
Steve McCurry’s book is a limited edition (3000 copies) with a price tag that is actually very mellow. It takes you on a visual, breathtaking journey, mixing tragedy and courage with humour, hope and humanity. This rare beauty is worth every penny.
