Sam Shaw
by Lorie Karnath
Sam Shaw may not be the best known photographer ever, but he did shoot one of the most memorable images ever taken: Marylin Monroe and the blowing white skirt over the subway grate. That picture is in the book, obviously, but much more interesting are many of the nearly casual and spontaneous picture Shaw took from Monroe. But this book is far more than Shaw meets Monroe. Shaw (1912 - 1999) basically shot every major Hollywood star of his days, like Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Sidney Poitier, Audrey Hepburn and countless others. A journey down memory lane for many. Publisher Hatje Cantz turned into a typical Hatje Cantz publication: not spectacular, rather modest in fact. Other publishers would have turned this into a bestseller - Hatje Cantz didn’t and that may very well be why you even like this book a little bit extra.
