LeRoy Grannis
Surf photography of the 1960s and 1970s
Were the people so small or were those boards just gigantic? LeRoy Grannis captured the surf scene in the 1960s and 1970s, the period that brought the sport to the mainstream. The black and white and Technicolor atmosphere is so typical that it almost appears to be staged. I guess if the creators of Mad Men would do a series on the surfing sixties it would look like this. The fact that it is real makes it even more interesting. The price is € 15.00 indeed. It’s an example of the hard to explain Taschen life-cycle for books. Grannis’s book was first published as a limited edition for € 600.00, next offered in a € 40.00 version and now in this ridiculously low-priced edition. Don’t ask why, benefit from it.
