KAWS
Brooklyn-based artist Brian Donnelly is the man behind KAWS. The book covers KAWS’ path so far, starting with underground graffiti and street work (his coolest work by far - according to us), turning into a producer of limited edition vinyl tops and becoming the established artist he is now. You may not know KAWS, but you may very well recognise his signature X-ed hands and the eyes. These Xs can be read in several ways. One is that when something is X-ed out, it is removed or negative. Read this way, Kaw’s X-ed out eyes and hands represent “the virtual deaths of characters who are human-like, but nonliving to begin with”. That’s deep. So his larger than life SpongeBob SquarePants is not all that funny after all. We’re not sure we complete get it, but for some reason it is kinda cool. Besides, everyone else says it is cool and ‘everyone’ can’t be wrong, right?
