Helmut Newton
Polaroids
Once upon a time... photography wasn’t a digital affair. As a consequence, one could not see the result of the work right away. Luckily Polaroid Company came up with a super high-tech machine to make instant pictures. Photographers used Polaroids as a test before shooting on film. The quality was lame, but at least they got an idea what they could expect. Nowadays Polaroids have a cult status and occupy a special place in the hearts of photography enthusiasts. Photographers like Bruno Bisang and Helmut Newton saved these test Polaroids. June Newton (the misses) collected them and created an Instant Newton book. A rare chance to peek into the intentions of some historical Newton shoots, including many from SUMO. It’s fun to see the origin of the Hipstamatic iPhone stuff we are all doing now. And because of this approach, the book has some added value. But for the rest we think the ‘Newton’ shelf is pretty much saturated now.
