Diana Vreeland
The Eye Has To Travel
Sometimes book covers are not so important, because the subject is interesting enough to sell the book - no matter what the cover looks like. The cover on this book doesn’t do justice to the subject, but it doesn’t matter, because the book is about Diana Vreeland (1903 - 1989) aka The High Priestess of Fashion, who ruled fashion for 50 years and pretty much defined fashion - and photography - the way we see it today. It must have been something, setting the standards with legendary photographers like Richard Avedon and Bert Stern, who also did the photo shoot for the XL book about Marylin Monroe. The book accompanies the movie, that goes under the same title and opened at the 2011 IDFA, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. A book to cherish - full of personal photos, original magazine spreads from Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and famous photographs - despite that awful cover.
