Book Art

We don’t do art books but when people start making art, installations and sculptures out of books and Gestalten publishers turns that into a book again... we have to make an exception. Faces sculpted out of pages, walls of books that act as canvasses, skies full of books. Amazing! But the project that strikes us most was done by Alicia Martin. She creates huge streams of books, bursting through walls or breaking out of a window. Almost as if buildings vomit books. Turns out that’s part of the message. Martin wants us to visualise the memories contained in the thousands of books, but also reminds us of the material overload in our culture. Note taken, but most of all: so cool to see!
