Quotes, I love quotes, because it is so tricky to use them in a book. A very logical thought whilst designing a book is (and we quote): “we need quotes”. Of course at first it works just perfectly. ‘A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous’. Bam! Thank you Coco Chanel. But the hassle begins when the production starts. You need 50 quotes, and they are not all great. ‘Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.’ What? ‘Chasing beauty is a synonym for desperation. I always loved the process of transformation’. ‘Because beauty isn’t enough, there must be something more’. At times it becomes awkward and that is just what we like.
Nevertheless American Beauty is a great book. It’s about beauty and it’s American (strong, independant women photographed by American photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank), so nothing wrong with that title, or with the photography.
