Advertising from the Mad Men era
Mid-Century Ads
AMC’s award-winning Mad Men is more than just a series. It has a huge impact on fashion, magazines, interior, photography and style in general. The series inspired Taschen to do a two volume book on advertising from the fifties and sixties. That must have been a wonderful time for ad men and designers – I mean, unlike today not everything had been done 20,000 times plus the world was ignorent. Booze were promoted and consumed like milk, mothers could be targeted through babies to smoke Marlboro and Salem tobacco claimed to ‘refresh your taste and air-soften every puff’. What a wonderful world for ad men, although it didn’t turn Don into the happiest camper.
